Abbey Lane is a short dead-end street running north from Skyline Drive, west of Pond Street, to a turnaround. It was laid out on the "Definitive Subdivision Plan of Abbey Lane, Billerica, Mass.," owned by Roger and Gloria Toothaker, dated March 19, 1968 and drawn by the K. J. Miller Company, Inc., civil engineers and land surveyors of Wilmington. The Planning Board approved it on April 30, 1968 and it was recorded on August 8, 1968 (Plan Book 107, Plan 57). The plan draws Abbey Lane 40 feet wide with a circle of 50 foot radius and four lots of 25,212 to 43,747 square feet; a house already stood on Lot 4, at the corner of Skyline Drive.
The assessors date the houses on the three other lots to 1968 and 1969. The origin of the name Abbey was not found. No vote accepting the street as a public way has been found. A petition article for the spring town meeting of 1991 asked for $1,000,000 to sewer "Mulberry Lane, Skyline Drive, Abby Lane and Applebee Way," and a motion to spend $300,000 to sewer "Mulberry Lane, Skyline Drive and Abbey Road" lost unanimously; the town's sewer Contract 28B, completed in 1997, sewered the Skyline Drive neighborhood, which the 1999 report lists as "Skyline Dr, Mulberry Lane, Abbey Lane."
